Door Access Control Systems Explained: Parts, Lock Types and Which Setup You Need
A door access control system decides who can open a door and records when they did. Offices, clinics, server rooms, labs and housing society gates use them to replace keys that get copied or lost.
The four parts of every system
- Reader / controller – where people identify themselves: PIN keypad, RFID card or key tag, fingerprint, or face.
- Electric lock – holds the door until the controller releases it.
- Power supply – a dedicated access control supply (12V) for the lock and reader.
- Exit device – a push button or no-touch switch on the inside so people can leave.
Choosing the reader
| Reader | Good for |
|---|---|
| PIN + RFID card | Most offices; cards can be disabled when lost |
| Fingerprint + card + PIN | Stricter rooms; no shared cards |
| Face recognition | Touch-free entry, high traffic, also records attendance |
| Weatherproof reader | Outdoor gates and building entrances |
Choosing the lock
| Lock | Door | On power failure |
|---|---|---|
| EM lock (maglock) | Wooden, metal and glass doors with a bracket | Opens (fail-safe) |
| Drop bolt | Glass and frameless doors; neat, hidden | Depends on model |
| Electric strike | Doors that already have a mortise lock | Depends on model |
| Electronic rim lock | Metal gates and main doors | Stays locked; opens with key |

Fail-safe vs fail-secure
Fail-safe locks open when power is lost — preferred for fire exits and occupied areas. Fail-secure locks stay locked — preferred for stores and valuables. Add a battery-backed supply if you need the system to keep working through power cuts.
Single door, multiple doors and interlocks
- Standalone readers manage one door each — simple and economical.
- Networked controllers manage many doors from one software, with time zones and reports.
- Door interlocking controllers make sure only one door of a pair (or more) opens at a time — used in clean rooms, labs and bank entrances.
Ready kits
Our combo kits bundle the reader, lock, bracket, power supply and exit button that work together. They are the fastest way to secure a door. See combos and kits.
Frequently asked questions
Can access control also record attendance?
Yes, many fingerprint and face terminals do both. See our attendance machine guide.
What if someone loses their card?
Delete that card from the controller and issue a new one; no need to change locks.
