DICM-02 two door interlocking controller card

Door Interlocking Systems for Cleanrooms and Pharma: How They Work

Short answer: a door interlocking system links two or more doors so that only one can be open at a time. Each door has an electric lock with a door-status sensor, and a controller keeps every other door locked until the open one is shut again. Pharma plants, cleanrooms, labs and operation theatres use it to hold room pressure and stop contamination moving between areas. On our store, interlocking controller cards cost ₹4,950 to ₹8,500 and complete kits with locks and buttons ₹11,950 to ₹34,950.

What is a door interlocking system?

Think of an airlock. You enter a small room through door A, close it, and only then can you open door B into the clean area. If door A is still open, door B will not unlock, however hard you press its button. The same rule works in reverse on the way out. The small room between the two doors is often called an airlock, ante-room or change room.

This matters because cleanrooms are kept at a different air pressure from the corridor outside. If both doors open together, unfiltered air rushes in, the pressure difference collapses, and the room can fail its classification. An interlock takes the human mistake out of the process.

How does door interlocking work?

  1. Every door reports its status. Each door has an EM lock with feedback, or a separate door sensor, that tells the controller whether it is closed and locked.
  2. A request to open. A person presses the push button or no-touch switch beside a door, or shows a card to a reader if access is restricted.
  3. The controller checks the others. If every other door in the group reports closed and locked, it releases the requested door. If any door is open, the request is ignored.
  4. The door relocks. Once the person passes and the door closes, it locks again and the next door becomes available.

The listings for our DICM controllers describe exactly this: if one door is open, the others stay locked until it is closed, and doors can be opened by RFID or proximity cards, push buttons or touch switches. The kits state that wire and installation are not included.

What parts does an interlocked airlock need?

  • Interlocking controller. Sized by the number of doors: 2, 4 or 8 on our store.
  • One electric lock per door, with status feedback. EM locks are the usual choice because they are fail-safe and have no moving bolt to wear. The EM-602 listing states a monitored door sensor; the EM-605 is sold as a feedback lock.
  • Buttons or readers on both sides of each door. Two per door is normal, one inside and one outside. No-touch infrared switches avoid hand contact, which suits hygienic areas.
  • A 12 V power supply sized for all the locks together.
  • An emergency release. The DICM listings state an emergency switch can be connected. A break-glass that drops all locks lets people out in a fire or medical emergency.

Personnel airlock vs pass box: what is the difference?

A personnel airlock interlocks room doors that people walk through. A pass box is a small through-wall cabinet for passing materials, with a door on each side. The same rule applies, only one door open at a time, but the hardware is compact. Our Combo-CN294 pass box set lists a relay controller board, two magnetic door locks, dual display status panels, a power supply, a fail-safe or fail-secure option and compatibility with UV system integration.

How many doors should the controller handle?

  • 2 doors: a single airlock or ante-room between a corridor and a clean room.
  • 4 doors: a gowning sequence, such as corridor, change room, airlock and process room, or two airlocks run by one controller.
  • 8 doors: a larger clean suite where several rooms open off a common buffer zone.

Plan for the number of doors that must never open together, not the total in the building. Two separate airlocks with no shared door can run on two small controllers.

Installation tips for cleanrooms and pharma

  • Use fail-safe locks on escape routes. EM locks release on power loss. Read our guide to fail-safe vs fail-secure locks before choosing anything else.
  • Fit door closers. The interlock only works if every door actually closes. A door left ajar locks the whole group.
  • Mark each door. A simple wait or enter light or sign beside each button stops people pressing repeatedly.
  • Keep the controller outside the clean area, where it can be serviced without breaking the room.
  • Follow your site's validation and fire safety rules. Your QA and fire officer decide the door sequence and emergency release; the hardware should match their drawing.

FAQ

What is a door interlocking system in pharma?

It is a set of electrically locked doors linked to a controller so that only one door in the group can open at a time. It protects room pressure and prevents cross-contamination between areas.

Can people get out in an emergency?

Yes, if an emergency release is fitted. Our DICM controllers accept an emergency switch, and a break-glass in the lock power line releases all doors.

Which lock is used for door interlocking?

Usually a 600 lbs EM lock with door-status feedback, because it reports whether the door is closed and releases on power loss.

How much does a 2-door interlocking system cost?

The DICM-02 controller alone is ₹4,950. The complete Combo-CN168 kit with two EM locks, exit buttons and a 12 V supply is ₹11,950.

Can access cards be used with an interlock?

Yes. The DICM listings state doors can be opened by RFID or proximity cards as well as push buttons or touch switches.

Is installation included?
