Can You Use a Cordless Phone With an EPABX?
Short answer: yes. A standard analogue cordless phone works as an EPABX extension exactly like a corded phone: you plug its base into the extension's wall socket, plug the base into power, and the handset gets that extension number. The Beetel X-90 cordless on our store costs ₹1,990 and works with any EPABX we sell. The two things to plan for are a power socket for the base and how far the handset will roam. How does a cordless phone work on an EPABX?
An EPABX extension port sends out an ordinary telephone line, the same kind of line a home gets from the telephone exchange. A cordless phone's base station is built to plug into that kind of line. The base talks to the handset by radio, and the handset can be carried around the house, shop or godown while staying on that one extension.
So from the exchange's point of view, a cordless phone is just another extension. You can call it by dialling its extension number, transfer an outside call to it, and dial out from it. Our EPABX listings say the same thing in plain words: standard corded or cordless telephones work as extensions.
IP phones are the exception. A Wi-Fi IP phone is also "wireless", but it does not plug into an EPABX extension at all. It needs an IP-PBX or a VoIP service. More on that below.
Where should you put the cordless base?
- At an extension socket. The base connects to a rosette with an RJ11 cord, just like a desk phone. If the socket is in a corner, run telephone cable to a more central spot and fit a rosette there. See how an EPABX is wired.
- Near a power socket. Unlike a corded phone, the base needs mains power to charge the handset and run the radio.
- In the middle of where you walk. Thick walls, slab floors and steel shutters cut range. A base on the ground floor stairwell usually covers a two-floor house better than one in a back room.
- Away from the Wi-Fi router and microwave. The X-90 is a 2.4 GHz cordless phone, the same band many routers and microwaves use, so give it a little distance.
Will caller ID and transfer work on a cordless extension?
Caller ID: the X-90 listing says it supports dual-mode DTMF and FSK caller ID, has a backlit display, keeps 40 incoming calls in memory and stores 50 numbers in its phone book. Whether a number shows also depends on the exchange. The CCL 108 (₹3,799) listing states internal and trunk caller ID in both FSK and DTMF, which matches the X-90.
Transfer: EPABX call transfer uses the flash (recall) key. The X-90 listing does not name a flash key, so if staff will transfer calls often from the cordless, check the manual or ask us on WhatsApp before buying several. For phones that mainly receive calls, this does not matter.
Other features named in the X-90 listing that help in a shop or home: two-way speakerphone, handset locator (page the handset from the base), out-of-range and low-battery warning tones, keypad lock and tone or pulse dialling.
What happens in a power cut?
The cordless base stops working when mains power goes, even if the handset battery is charged. If the EPABX is on an inverter or UPS, put the cordless base on the same backup. Many owners keep one corded phone, such as a Beetel C11, at reception for this reason.
Can one cordless set have several handsets?
If a cordless set comes with extra handsets, they all share the base's single extension. They ring together and act as one extension number, though most such sets let handsets call each other internally. If you need different extension numbers in different rooms, use separate phones on separate extension ports instead.
Cordless phone or a wireless intercom?
People searching for "cordless intercom" often want to avoid wiring altogether. A cordless phone still needs one wired extension point for its base. If you cannot lay any cable at all and only need room-to-room talk, a radio intercom is the other option. Our FM wireless intercom, 2 units plugs into power sockets and its listing gives up to 600 m range in open areas, channels 0 to 9 and an auto-answer mode. It cannot take a landline and is not part of an EPABX.

FAQ
Can I connect a cordless phone to an EPABX extension?
Yes. Plug the cordless base into the extension's rosette with its RJ11 cord and into a power socket. The handset then works on that extension number.
Does a cordless phone need a separate EPABX port?
Yes, one extension port per cordless base, the same as a corded phone. Extra handsets on the same base share that one extension.
Why does my cordless extension stop working during power cuts?
The cordless base runs on mains power. Connect it to the same inverter or UPS as the EPABX, or keep one corded phone for outages.
Will the Beetel X-90 show caller ID on an EPABX?
The X-90 supports DTMF and FSK caller ID. It shows the number if the EPABX passes caller ID to extensions, as the CCL 108 listing says it does.
Can a Wi-Fi phone work with my EPABX?
Not directly. A Wi-Fi IP phone needs an IP-PBX or VoIP service. For a standard EPABX, use an analogue cordless phone such as the X-90.
