Combo-CN21 electronic rim lock with switch power supply

How to Open the Gate Lock From Every Floor of the House

Short answer: fit an electronic rim lock on the gate, put its power supply indoors, and run a 2-core cable from a push button on each floor to the supply's switch input, with all the buttons connected in parallel so any one of them opens the gate. A lock with a switch supply costs ₹2,700 (Combo-CN21), and each extra push button costs ₹217 to ₹600. If running wires to every floor is hard, use remotes or a 433 MHz wireless wall switch (₹499) instead, or open the gate from intercom phones with a door lock converter kit.

This is the classic setup for Indian houses where the family lives on the first and second floors and the main gate is at ground level. Below are the three ways to do it, the steps, and the parts on our store with live prices that include GST.

What are the ways to open the gate from upstairs?

  • Wired push buttons on every floor. The most reliable. No batteries, nothing to lose, works even when the Wi-Fi is down. Needs a cable from each floor to the supply.
  • Remotes or a wireless wall switch. No cable to the floors. Each person carries a remote, or you fix a 433 MHz wireless switch on the wall of each floor.
  • Intercom handsets. If you want to talk to the visitor first, a door lock converter lets any intercom phone in the house open the gate.

You can mix the first two. Many supplies, such as the PSRM-01, take remotes and also accept a wired switch, as their listings state.

How to wire push buttons on every floor

These are general steps. Follow the wiring diagram supplied with your lock and supply, and have a trained electrician do the mains connection.

  1. Fit the lock on the gate. Mount the rim lock on the inside face of the gate with the strike on the frame. A metal gate may need a welded plate.
  2. Place the supply indoors. Choose a dry wall inside the house, ideally near where the cables from the floors can meet. Keep it away from water.
  3. Run the lock cable. Take a cable from the supply's lock terminals out to the gate, through conduit where it crosses open ground.
  4. Run a 2-core cable to each floor. One cable from the supply's switch input to a button on the ground floor, one to the first floor, one to the second, and so on.
  5. Connect the buttons in parallel. All buttons go across the same two switch terminals. A push button is a normally-open contact, so pressing any one of them closes the circuit and opens the lock.
  6. Fix the buttons where people reach easily. Near the stair door or the balcony door on each floor.
  7. Test from every floor. Press each button, check the gate releases, and check the key still opens the lock from outside.

Parallel wiring is why one supply can serve any number of floors: adding a floor is just another button and another cable. Keep the button cable away from mains wiring runs where you can.

What does it cost for a three-floor house?

Here is a worked example using live prices. We assume one push button on each of three floors (ground, first, second).

  • Combo-CN21 electronic lock with switch power supply: ₹2,700
  • 3 × PSW-44 plastic exit push buttons at ₹217: ₹651
  • Total: ₹3,351, plus cable and the electrician's time.

Note that the Combo-CN21 listing describes it for main gates and metal doors that open outside, so check your gate direction first; if your gate opens inward, send us a photo on WhatsApp and we will suggest a matching lock and supply. Prefer steel buttons? Three SSW-412P stainless steel buttons (₹490 each) bring the total to ₹4,170. Want both buttons and remotes? Combo-CN231 (₹3,699) gives a lock, the PSRM-01 supply and 3 remotes, and the supply also takes a wired switch.

When should I use remotes or a wireless switch instead?

Choose wireless when the house is already finished and you do not want to chase walls for cable. Each family member gets a remote, or you fix a PSSW-RM wireless switch (433 MHz, up to 50 m in open area) on each floor like a normal button. Walls, slabs and metal reduce range, so test from the top floor before fixing anything. Match the frequency to your receiver: our 433 MHz remote and receiver guide explains how, and you can ask us on WhatsApp to confirm the switch suits your supply.

If you also want to open the gate from your phone when you are away, the Wi-Fi supplies covered in open your main gate lock from your phone keep a wired switch input too.

How do I open the gate from intercom phones on each floor?

If each floor already has an intercom handset, or you are planning one, a door lock converter connects the electronic lock to the intercom. The Combo-CN217 listing says anyone in the building can then open the gate from their handset, and you can add a door phone to talk to visitors before opening. Combo-CN217 is for a 4-line intercom and Combo-CN190 for an 8-line one, both with Beetel C11 phones. For choosing the exchange itself, see the EPABX intercom system guide.

Which setup suits your house?

  • Two or three floors, new construction or renovation: Combo-CN21 plus one push button per floor.
  • Finished house, no new wiring: Combo-CN231 with 3 remotes, and a PSSW-RM wireless switch on floors without a remote holder.
  • Joint family with tenants upstairs: push buttons per floor, plus remotes for those who drive.
  • You want to see or hear who is at the gate first: an intercom kit such as Combo-CN217, or a video door phone kit from rim lock and door phone kits.

FAQ

How many push buttons can I connect to one gate lock supply?

Buttons are wired in parallel to the same switch input, so you can add one per floor. For very long cable runs or many buttons, check the supply's manual or ask us on WhatsApp.

Which cable should I use for the floor switches?

A 2-core cable from each button to the supply's switch input is the usual practice. Ask your electrician to pick a size suited to the distance, and run it in conduit.

Will the gate open from upstairs during a power cut?

No. Buttons, remotes and intercom opening all need power at the supply. The gate stays locked and opens from outside with the key.

Can I use remotes and wired switches together?

Yes, with supplies that support both. The PSRM-01 listing says a wired switch can be connected alongside its remotes, and Combo-CN231 comes with 3 remotes.

Can tenants on different floors each open the gate?

Yes. Give each floor its own push button, a remote, or an intercom handset with a door lock converter kit.
