Tuya Smart Life Devices: Build a Simple Smart Home Security Setup
Short answer: Tuya devices all work in one free phone app, Smart Life, so you can build a basic home or shop security setup piece by piece without an alarm panel: a Wi-Fi door sensor (₹1,249), a Wi-Fi motion sensor (₹1,900), a smoke or gas alarm (₹1,799 to ₹2,699) and a 120dB Wi-Fi siren (₹2,950), all sending alerts to your phone. A ready starter kit with siren, motion sensor and door sensor costs ₹5,450, and a typical 4-device setup bought separately comes to about ₹7,900. Prices include GST and delivery across India is free.
What is Tuya and Smart Life?
Tuya is a smart-device platform used by many brands. Devices built on it connect to your home Wi-Fi and are controlled from the Smart Life app (or the Tuya Smart app) on Android or iPhone. The benefit for you is simple: one app, one login, and devices that can talk to each other. A door sensor can trigger a siren, a motion sensor can switch on a light, and a whole family can share access from their own phones.
Most Tuya devices on our store also link to Amazon Alexa and Google Home through your Smart Life account, according to their listings.
Which Tuya devices do I need for basic security?
Start with the doors, then the rooms, then fire and gas. A sensible order:
- Door or window sensor on the main entry. The MC-TY door sensor sends a phone notification the moment the door opens. It runs on two AAA (LR03) batteries, has a low-battery alert and needs no hub.
- Motion sensor in the hall or shop floor. The PIR-TY motion sensor detects movement at 9 to 12 metres over a 90° angle, sounds its own alarm above 80dB and runs on 5V USB power.
- A loud siren. Phone alerts are useless if you are asleep or your phone is on silent. The SRN-TY Wi-Fi siren gives a 120dB alarm and its listing says it supports up to 50 remotes and 50 wireless detectors.
- Smoke alarm. The SMK-TY smoke alarm is photoelectric, runs on 2 AA batteries, sounds above 85dB and pushes a fire alert to your phone.
- Gas leak alarm for the kitchen. The Tuya Wi-Fi gas detector detects LPG and natural gas, shows the reading on an LCD, has a built-in heat alarm and can drive a compatible gas shut-off valve.
How do I set up Tuya devices in Smart Life?
- Use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Tuya devices on our store connect to 2.4 GHz networks only. If your router shows one combined name for 2.4 and 5 GHz, temporarily split them or stand close to the router while pairing.
- Install Smart Life from the Play Store or App Store and create an account with your email or mobile.
- Put the device in pairing mode. This is usually a long press on the reset button until a light blinks fast. The exact steps are in each device's manual.
- Tap + in the app, choose the device type or let the app scan, enter your Wi-Fi password and wait for it to connect.
- Name each device by place: "Main door", "Shop floor", "Kitchen gas". Clear names make alerts easy to read at 3 am.
- Create automations. In the Scene or Automation tab, set rules such as "If main door opens, sound the siren" or "If motion at night, switch on the porch light".
- Share with family. Add family members as home members so they get the same alerts on their own phones.
Can Tuya also control locks, gates and lights?
Yes. This is where a Tuya setup goes beyond alerts.
- The TYP-12 Wi-Fi relay wires between a 12V supply and an electric lock or gate motor input, so you can open it from your phone, from a 433 MHz remote (which works even when the internet is down) or by voice. Its relay is rated 10A and runs on 7 to 32V AC/DC or 5V USB.
- The TYS-22 mini Wi-Fi switch fits behind a normal switch board to make a light or appliance smart, and the DIY-AC04-TY controls four appliances separately.
- The TYCL-100 drawer lock is a hidden Bluetooth lock for a cash drawer or cupboard; its listing says remote unlocking works once a Tuya Bluetooth gateway is connected.
Gate and pump control with relays is covered in depth in our GSM gate opener and Wi-Fi relay guide.

When should I choose a proper alarm panel instead?
Standalone Tuya devices depend on your Wi-Fi and internet for phone alerts. If the router is off in a power cut, notifications stop. Two fixes: put the router on a mini UPS, or choose a Wi-Fi plus GSM alarm panel that also sends SMS and calls through a SIM card. The ACJ-402 Wi-Fi + GSM kit (₹6,999) works in the same Smart Life app and is listed with 100 wireless zones. For a full comparison read our Wi-Fi + GSM home security alarm guide.

FAQ
Do Tuya devices need a hub?
Wi-Fi Tuya devices such as the MC-TY door sensor and PIR-TY motion sensor connect straight to your router, so no hub is needed. Bluetooth devices such as the TYCL-100 drawer lock need a Tuya Bluetooth gateway for remote unlocking.
Do Tuya devices work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
No. The Tuya devices on our store connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Most dual-band home routers broadcast 2.4 GHz as well, so pair them on that band.
Is the Smart Life app free?
Yes. Smart Life is free on Android and iPhone, with no monthly charge for app alerts.
Can different Tuya devices work together?
Yes. In the Smart Life app you can create automations, for example making the siren sound when the door sensor opens, as long as all devices are in the same app account.
Will I get alerts if the internet is down?
Not on a Wi-Fi-only device, because app alerts travel over the internet. Local sirens still sound. For alerts without internet, use a Wi-Fi + GSM alarm panel with a SIM card.
Do Tuya devices work with Alexa and Google Home?
Most Tuya devices on our store list Alexa and Google Home support through your Smart Life account. Check the individual product page for each device.
