Galvanised gear rack for a sliding gate motor

Sliding Gate Motor Buying Guide: Gate Weight, Motor Size, Safety and Remotes

An automatic sliding gate motor opens and closes a sliding gate at the press of a remote. Getting the motor size right is the most important decision — an undersized motor strains, wears out and stops early.

1. Know your gate's weight

Motors are rated by the maximum gate weight they can move (for example 600 kg, 1200 kg or 2000 kg). Estimate your gate's weight from its size and material, or ask your fabricator. Choose a motor with comfortable headroom above the gate weight — around 30–50% extra is a sensible margin, especially for long or heavy gates.

2. Check the track and gate condition

  • The gate should slide smoothly by hand on a straight, clean track.
  • Wheels and the top guide should be in good condition.
  • Any stiffness by hand will be worse for the motor — fix it before installing.

3. What comes in a complete kit

  • Motor with control board
  • Gear rack – fixed along the gate; the motor's gear drives it. Measure your gate length to know how many metres you need.
  • Limit switches – stop the gate at fully open and fully closed.
  • Remotes – usually two; more can be paired.
  • Release keys – to free the motor and move the gate by hand during a power cut.

4. Safety first: photocell sensors

A pair of infrared photocell sensors across the opening stops or reverses the gate if a person, child, pet or car is in the way. We strongly recommend them for every installation.

5. Smart control options

Add-on What it does
Wi-Fi module Open/close from your phone
GSM gate opener Open with a phone call from authorised numbers, no internet needed
Wireless keypad Enter a code at the gate
Flashing lamp Warns people while the gate moves

Frequently asked questions

What happens during a power cut?

Use the release key to unlock the motor and slide the gate by hand. A battery or inverter backup can keep it working automatically.

Can I automate a swing gate instead?

Yes, swing gates use different (arm-type) motors. Contact us with your gate size and photos.

Do you install?

We supply complete kits with free technical support. For projects, send an enquiry.
