Access Control Installation Manual
NavKar installation manual
Door access control, installed right.
A step-by-step guide to fitting an EM lock, drop bolt or electric strike with a reader, exit switch and 12 V power supply. For installers, electricians and owners.
Section 1
What is in a door kit.
Every access-controlled door uses the same parts. Model numbers below are the ones NavKar supplies.
Section 2
Safety first.
- Switch off the mains before connecting the power supply. Mains wiring should be done by a qualified electrician.
- Every access-controlled door must open from the inside without a card, using an exit switch or a no-touch sensor.
- Fit an emergency break-glass (GBS-44) on doors that are part of an escape route, and follow local fire safety rules.
- Use an access control power supply, not a phone-style adapter. Mount it indoors, away from water.
- Do not drill toughened glass. Use a U or GG bracket on frameless glass doors.
Section 3
Tools and materials.
Keep cable runs short. For runs over about 30 metres, use thicker conductors or place the power supply nearer the door so the lock still gets a full 12 V.
Section 4
Check the door before you start.
Stand on the inside of the door, where the lock will be fitted. If you push the door to open it, it opens away from the lock side. If you pull it, it opens towards the lock side, and an EM lock needs the Z + L bracket set.
| Your door | Lock | Bracket |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden or metal door, opens away from lock side | EM-602 | None (BRL-EM if the frame is narrow) |
| Wooden or metal door, opens towards lock side | EM-602 | BRZ-EM + BRL-EM |
| Frameless glass, wall or frame above | EM-602 or DBFG-05 | BRUG-EM for the EM lock |
| Frameless glass, glass on all sides | EM-602 | BRGG-EM |
| Double door | EMDL-1202 | None in most cases |
| Wooden door, hidden bolt wanted | DBWD-02 or DBWD-05 | None (BRU-DB on glass) |
| Existing mortise lock and handle | STFC-02 | None |
Also check that the door closes fully on its own. Fit or adjust the door closer first: an electric lock cannot hold a door that does not close.
Section 5
Fitting an EM lock.
- Mark the position. The magnet goes on the underside of the top frame, on the side away from the hinges. Close the door and mark where the armature plate will meet the magnet face.
- Fix the mounting plate. Screw the magnet's mounting plate to the frame (or to the L bracket if the frame is narrow), keeping it level.
- Drill for the cable. Drill a hole through the frame for the lock cable and run the cable to where the power supply will be.
- Slide on the magnet. Fix the magnet body to the mounting plate with the supplied screws.
- Fit the armature plate. Fix the steel plate on the door (or on the Z bracket) with the supplied bolt and rubber washers so it sits flat on the magnet face.
- Leave it slightly loose. The plate should rock a little on its bolt. This lets it sit fully flat on the magnet and gives full holding force. Do not overtighten it.
Section 6
Fitting a drop bolt or electric strike.
- Cut the frame. Mark and cut the pocket in the top frame for the drop bolt body, following the template supplied with the lock.
- Fit the strike plate on the door. The bolt drops into the hole in this plate. Line it up exactly with the bolt.
- Check the alignment. Close the door slowly. The bolt must drop cleanly into the hole without rubbing. A drop bolt needs a door that closes accurately every time.
- Set the time delay. Models with a timer, like the DBWD-05, wait a moment after the door shuts before the bolt drops. Set it so the door has fully closed.
Electric strike (STFC-02): remove the existing strike plate from the frame, enlarge the cut-out to fit the strike body, and fix it so the latch of your mortise lock sits in it. Set it to fail-safe or fail-secure as needed before fitting.
Section 7
Mounting the reader and exit switch.
- Reader. Mount it outside, next to the lock side of the door, about 1.2 to 1.4 metres from the floor. Outdoor doors need a weatherproof reader (WPRF-1K, FCAC-1K) or a rain cover.
- Exit switch. Mount it inside at the same height, within easy reach of the door. Recess it into a switch box, or use a surface gang box when the wall cannot be cut.
- Power supply. Mount the PK-80 indoors near a 230 V socket, where it can be reached for adjustment.
Section 8
Wiring diagrams.
Terminal names differ between readers. Use these diagrams to understand the connections, then follow the diagram printed in your reader's own manual.
EM lock (fail-safe): the lock is powered through the reader's COM and NC contacts. A valid card opens the relay, power is cut, and the door releases.
Drop bolt or strike (fail-secure): use COM and NO instead. Check your lock's manual: some drop bolts are fail-safe and are wired like an EM lock.
Break-glass: the GBS-44 goes in series with the lock's power line, so pressing it cuts power to the lock even if the reader fails.
Section 9
Set up and test.
- Power on. Switch on the mains. Check 12 V DC at the reader and at the lock with a multimeter.
- Set the door-open time. Set the delay on the reader or on the PK-80 (0 to 15 seconds). 3 to 5 seconds suits most doors.
- Add users. Enter programming mode with the reader's master code, then add cards, PINs, fingers or faces as described in the reader's manual. Change the default master code.
- Test the reader. A valid card or finger should release the lock. An unknown card should not.
- Test the exit switch. Pressing it should release the lock for the same time.
- Test a power cut. Switch off the supply. An EM lock should release. A fail-secure lock stays locked, so make sure there is another way in.
- Test the break-glass on fire exits, then reset it.
Section 10
Troubleshooting.
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| EM lock does not hold at all | No power at the lock, or wired to NO instead of NC | Measure 12 V at the lock. Move the lock wire to NC. |
| EM lock holds weakly | Plate not flat on the magnet, dirt on the faces, or plate bolted too tight | Clean both faces. Loosen the plate so it can rock and sit flat. Check the voltage at the lock. |
| Valid card does not open the door | Card not added, wrong card type, or relay wiring | Re-add the card. Check 125 kHz vs 13.56 MHz. Check COM and NC/NO. |
| Exit switch does nothing | Wired to the wrong terminal | Connect the switch between OPEN (or PUSH) and GND on the reader or PK-80. |
| Door opens for too short a time | Delay set too low | Increase the door-open time on the reader or PK-80. |
| Reader restarts or beeps when the lock releases | Voltage spike from the lock | Fit a 1N4007 diode across the lock. Run the lock and reader on separate cores. |
| Drop bolt does not lock | Door misaligned or bolt dropping too early | Re-align the strike plate. Increase the lock delay so the door closes first. |
| Door unlocks in a power cut | Normal for EM locks (fail-safe) | Add a battery backup supply if the door must stay locked during power cuts. |
Section 11
Care and support.
- Wipe the magnet and plate faces every few months with a dry cloth.
- Check the door closer and alignment once a year.
- Test the exit switch and break-glass regularly.
- Keep the master code and a spare card in a safe place.
