Analog HD vs IP Cameras: DVR or NVR, and Why They Don't Mix

Short answer: analog HD cameras send video down a coaxial (BNC) cable to a DVR, while IP cameras send digital video over a network (LAN) cable to an NVR, usually taking power from the same cable through PoE. Because the signals are completely different, a normal DVR cannot record IP cameras and an NVR cannot record analog cameras, so pick one system per site and buy matching parts. On our store, analog HD cameras start at ₹796 (including GST) and the CP Plus 8-channel NVR is ₹5,999, but no DVR is listed at the moment.

Our CCTV camera buying guide covers Wi-Fi vs wired cameras. This page is about the wired choice that confuses most buyers: analog HD with a DVR, or IP with an NVR.

What is an analog HD camera?

An analog HD camera captures the picture and sends it as an analog video signal over coaxial cable, the round cable with a BNC plug at each end. Power travels on a separate pair, usually from a central 12 V supply. At the other end, a DVR (digital video recorder) turns the signal into digital video and stores it on a hard disk.

"HD analog" comes in several formats with names such as AHD, HDCVI and HDTVI. Some cameras let you switch between them. The CP Plus CP-URC-TC24PL3C-L-V2 lists video output choices of CVI, TVI, AHD or CVBS from one BNC port, and the Jensonic AHD cameras are titled as supporting all DVRs. Matching the format to the DVR is the main thing to check.

If you have network cable instead of coax, a passive video balun lets an analog camera use it. Our VB-04 balun set lists 4 channels of AHD, HDCVI and HDTVI over UTP, with no power needed and a distance of up to 300 m.

What is an IP camera?

An IP camera is a small computer with a lens. It turns the picture into compressed digital video inside the camera and sends it over an ordinary network cable, just like a laptop on a LAN. With PoE (Power over Ethernet), the same cable also carries power from a PoE switch, so each camera needs only one cable.

The recorder for IP cameras is an NVR (network video recorder). It does not decode a video signal itself; it receives already-digital streams over the network. Our CP Plus CP-UNR-108F1 NVR lists 8 channels, support for cameras up to 8MP, H.265 compression, one SATA hard disk up to 8 TB, HDMI and VGA output, and ONVIF compatibility for IP cameras from other brands.

Why don't analog cameras and IP recorders mix?

Think of it as two different languages on two different kinds of wire:

  • An analog camera has a BNC video output. A DVR has BNC inputs. An NVR has none.
  • An IP camera has an RJ45 network port. An NVR talks to it over the network. A standard DVR cannot.
  • Even the cable is different: coax plus a power pair for analog, a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable for IP with PoE.

Some recorders sold as "hybrid" or "XVR" accept analog cameras and a few IP channels together. If you need that, check the recorder's datasheet for exactly how many IP channels it takes. We do not currently list one.

The most common mistake we see is a customer buying a few IP cameras to add to an old DVR system, or analog cameras on offer to add to an NVR. Neither works without extra converters, which usually cost more than buying the right camera.

DVR vs NVR: side by side

Point Analog HD + DVR IP + NVR
Cable to each camera Coax (BNC) plus a power pair, or UTP with a balun One network cable; PoE carries power
Power Central 12 V supply PoE switch or NVR PoE ports
Where video is processed In the DVR In each camera
Mixing brands Match the HD format (AHD, CVI, TVI) to the DVR ONVIF lets many brands work together; check each camera
Best for Upgrading an existing coax system, low cost per camera New buildings, higher resolution, systems that will grow

Which should you choose?

Choose analog HD with a DVR if:

  • The building already has coax running to each camera point. Reusing it saves a lot of labour.
  • You need the lowest price per camera and 2MP-class video is enough.
  • It is a small, fixed system of four to eight cameras that you do not expect to grow.

Choose IP with an NVR if:

  • You are wiring a new house, shop, school or factory, and can lay network cable from day one.
  • You want higher resolution. The CP-UNR-108F1 supports cameras up to 8MP.
  • You want one cable per camera for both power and video, using a PoE switch.
  • You expect to add cameras or other network devices, such as door phones and access control, later.

FAQ

Can I connect an IP camera to a DVR?

Not to a standard DVR. A DVR takes analog video on BNC inputs, while an IP camera sends network data. Some hybrid recorders accept a few IP channels; check the recorder's datasheet.

Can an NVR record analog cameras?

No. An NVR records digital streams from IP cameras over the network. Analog cameras need a DVR or a hybrid recorder.

Is IP better than analog HD?

IP usually gives higher resolution and one-cable PoE wiring, and suits new or growing systems. Analog HD is cheaper per camera and makes sense when coax cable is already in the walls.

What is PoE in CCTV?

Power over Ethernet sends power and data on one network cable. A PoE switch, such as our 8-port CP Plus model with a 120 W budget, powers IP cameras without separate adapters.

Do you sell a DVR?

Not at the moment. Our store lists the CP Plus CP-UNR-108F1 8-channel NVR for IP cameras. WhatsApp us if you need a DVR for analog cameras.

Can I use network cable for analog cameras?

Yes, with a video balun at each end. Our VB-04 set carries 4 analog HD channels over UTP up to 300 m, per its listing.
