LPG Gas Leak Detector for Home Kitchens: How It Works and Where to Fit It
Short answer: an LPG gas leak detector is a small wall-mounted sensor that measures combustible gas in the air and sounds a loud alarm when the level reaches its set threshold, long before the gas can catch fire. Because LPG is heavier than air, it is fitted low on the kitchen wall near the cylinder and stove, away from exhaust fans and steam. A Wi-Fi model such as the one on our store (₹2,699) also sends the alert to your phone through the Tuya / Smart Life app.
What is an LPG gas leak detector?
It is a sensor, not a valve. It watches the air around your cylinder and hob and warns you when gas has built up. In Indian homes the risk usually comes from a loose regulator, a cracked rubber pipe, a burner left on after the flame went out, or a cylinder that leaks at the valve. LPG has an added smell, but you will not smell it if you are asleep, out of the house, or in another room with the door closed. That is the gap a detector fills.
A gas detector is different from a smoke detector. A smoke detector reacts once something is already burning. A gas detector reacts to the fuel before there is any fire. Kitchens need the gas detector; smoke detectors belong in the rooms and corridor outside, because cooking fumes set them off.
How does a gas leak detector work?
Inside is a sensor that responds to combustible gases. The detector converts that reading into a percentage of the lower explosive limit (LEL), which is the lowest concentration at which the gas can ignite. It alarms at a small fraction of that level, so you have time to act.
The Wi-Fi gas detector we sell states these figures in its listing:
- Gases: LPG and natural gas (CH₄), plus a built-in heat alarm at 57°C.
- Detection range: 0–100% LEL, with the alarm set at 6% LEL.
- Response time: 30 seconds or less.
- Alerts: local sound and light alarm of at least 70 dB with voice prompt, and phone notifications over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
- Display: LCD showing gas concentration, temperature, date, time and status.
- Power: 5V 1A through Type-C or Micro USB, adapter included.
- Warm-up: about 180 seconds after power-on before it reads correctly.
- Sensor life: about 5 years, with a sensor-life indicator and fault warning.
- Valve output: 12V / 300mA for 15 seconds to drive a compatible automatic gas shut-off valve (the valve is not included).
Where should you fit an LPG gas detector?
Placement matters more than the brand. A detector in the wrong spot can stay silent while gas collects a metre away.
- Fit it low. LPG is heavier than air and settles near the floor. Mount the detector low on the wall, close to the cylinder and hob. The manual gives the exact height and distance; follow it.
- Keep it within the same room as the gas source. Do not hide it inside a closed cabinet or behind the cylinder trolley, where air does not move freely.
- Stay away from exhaust fans, chimneys, windows and doors. Strong airflow carries gas past the sensor. The listing specifically warns against strong airflow.
- Avoid steam and splashes. Do not fix it right next to the sink, the pressure cooker or the burners, where vapour and grease reach it.
- Indoors only. The listing says it should not be installed outdoors, so it is not for open balconies or terraces.
- Plan a power socket. It runs from the supplied adapter. The listing does not mention an internal battery, so connect it to an inverter-backed socket if power cuts are common in your area.
- Piped natural gas is different. Natural gas (PNG) is lighter than air, so detectors for PNG are mounted high, near the ceiling. Check which gas your kitchen uses before fixing the bracket.
How to set it up and test it
- Fix it with the two screws or the adhesive tape supplied, at the position chosen above.
- Plug in the adapter and wait about three minutes for the warm-up to finish.
- Install the Smart Life or Tuya app, add the device and connect it to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network, which is what the listing specifies.
- Press the self-test button and confirm the alarm sounds and the phone notification arrives.
- Add family members to the app so more than one person gets the alert.
- Repeat the self-test every month, and replace the unit when the sensor-life indicator says it is due.
What to do when the gas alarm goes off
Basic, widely given safety advice for an LPG leak:
- Do not light a match or lighter, and do not switch any electrical switch, fan or light on or off.
- Turn off the burner knobs and close the cylinder regulator.
- Open doors and windows to let the gas out.
- Get everyone out and call your gas distributor's emergency service from outside.
- Do not use the stove again until the leak is found and fixed.

FAQ
Where should an LPG gas detector be installed in the kitchen?
Low on the wall near the cylinder and hob, because LPG is heavier than air and collects near the floor. Keep it away from exhaust fans, chimneys, windows and steam, and follow the height given in the manual.
Can a gas leak detector send an alert to my phone?
Yes, if it is a Wi-Fi model. Our Tuya gas detector sends gas-leak and heat-alarm notifications through the Smart Life or Tuya app over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and it still sounds its own alarm locally.
Does a gas detector work without Wi-Fi?
The local sound and light alarm works without Wi-Fi. Only the phone alerts and remote monitoring need a working 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection.
Can a gas detector shut off the cylinder automatically?
The detector itself does not close the gas. Our model has a 12V output that can drive a compatible automatic shut-off valve, which is bought and installed separately.
Is a smoke detector enough for the kitchen?
No. A smoke detector reacts to smoke after a fire starts and gives false alarms from cooking. A gas detector warns about leaking LPG before anything burns.
How long does a gas leak detector last?
Our Wi-Fi gas detector states a sensor life of about 5 years and shows the remaining sensor life on its display. Test it monthly with the self-test button.
