Wireless Doorbell Guide: Range, Ringtones and Where to Fit It
Short answer: a wireless doorbell is a push button that sends a radio signal to a chime unit inside, so no wire has to run between the gate and the house. Our DRB-43 (₹549) is rated for up to 1000 feet (300 metres) in its listing, with 32 ringtones, 4 volume levels and an LED flash; real range is shorter through walls, slabs and steel gates, so test the spot before you drill. Prices are live website prices, include GST, and delivery across India is free.
What is a wireless doorbell and how does it work?
It has two parts. The transmitter is the button outside at the gate or door. The receiver is the chime inside, which plays the ringtone. When a visitor presses the button, it sends a short radio signal and the receiver rings. Because the two parts are paired by radio, you can put the chime in the kitchen, the bedroom or the godown, and move it later without calling an electrician.
This is the simplest answer to a common Indian problem: the gate is at the end of the drive or the bell wire was cut during painting, and nobody wants to chisel a new wire channel through the wall.
How far does a wireless doorbell work?
The range printed on the box is measured in open air, with nothing between the button and the chime. The DRB-43 listing states up to 1000 feet (300 metres). Inside a real house, expect less, because these things weaken the signal:
- Brick walls and RCC slabs. Each wall and floor between the button and the chime eats into the range.
- Steel gates, grills and shutters. A button fixed directly on a steel gate sends much of its signal into the metal. Fix it on the pillar instead where you can.
- Metal almirahs and fridges close to the receiver.
- Distance plus height. A chime on the second floor at the back of the house is the hardest case.
Before fixing anything, ask someone to press the button at the exact spot while you carry the chime around the house. If it rings reliably in the room you want, fix it there.
Ringtones, volume and LED flash: what do they help with?
The DRB-43 has 32 ringtones and 4 volume levels. Different tones are handy if you have more than one bell, for example one at the gate and one at the back door, so you know which door to go to. The volume control lets you keep it soft near a baby's room or loud in a shop's back store.
The LED flash matters more than people think. It gives a visual alert when the room is noisy, when someone is wearing headphones, or for an elderly family member who is hard of hearing.
Where should you fit a wireless doorbell?
- Button height. About shoulder height of an adult, so visitors find it easily and children cannot play with it too much.
- Weather. The listing does not give a waterproof rating, so fit the button under a canopy, porch or gate-pillar cap, out of direct rain.
- Pillar, not gate leaf. A fixed pillar gives better range than a moving steel gate, and the button is not banged every time the gate shuts.
- Chime position. A central spot, such as the hall or the stair landing, so the sound reaches more rooms.
- Power. Check the product page for how the button and chime are powered before choosing the chime's spot, in case it needs a plug socket nearby.
The DRB-43 listing names homes, offices, classrooms, shops and warehouses as suitable places. In a shop, a common use is a bell at the counter that rings in the back godown, or a bell at the rear loading door.

A wireless bell tells you someone is there. If you want to know who before you walk out, an audio or video door phone is the next step up. Our Wi-Fi video doorbell guide covers app alerts and battery life, and the video door phone buying guide covers wired systems with a monitor.
When should you use a 12 V access control bell instead?
On an office or clinic door fitted with a card, PIN or fingerprint reader, staff enter on their own, but visitors still need to call someone. A wired 12 V bell such as the ACBL-12 is meant for this: the visitor presses the bell button and someone inside opens the door with the exit switch. Several of our ready access control kits already include a 12 V door bell. See the door access control system guide for how the parts fit together.
Wireless doorbell not ringing? Quick checks
- Check or replace the battery in the button, if your model uses one.
- Bring the chime close to the button. If it rings there, the problem is range, not the bell: move the chime or the button.
- Pair the button and chime again by following the manual.
- Move the chime away from metal cupboards, the fridge and the Wi-Fi router.
- If a neighbour's bell sets yours off, check the manual for a way to change the pairing code.
