Wi-Fi Video Doorbell Guide: App Alerts, Two-Way Talk and Battery Life
Short answer: a Wi-Fi video doorbell connects to your home router, sends an alert to your phone when someone presses the bell, and lets you see and talk to the visitor from anywhere through an app. Battery models such as our VDP-TY (₹2,799) need no wiring and, by its listing, run about six months on a charge at five rings a day; wired Wi-Fi door phones with an indoor monitor cost ₹10,500 to ₹16,900 and add a screen inside the house and lock release. All prices are live website prices, include GST, and delivery across India is free.
What is a Wi-Fi video doorbell and how does it work?
It is a camera, a bell button, a microphone and a speaker in one small unit at your door. It joins your home Wi-Fi like a phone does. When a visitor presses the button, the doorbell wakes up, rings a chime inside the house and pushes a call to the app on your phone. You tap the notification, see the live video and talk. Because the call goes over the internet, it reaches you whether you are in the next room, at the office or in another city.
There are two kinds on our store, and it helps to know which one you are looking at:
- Battery video doorbell. One unit, screwed beside the door, charged by cable every few months. A small USB receiver indoors acts as the chime. No indoor screen: your phone is the screen. Example: the VDP-TY.
- Wi-Fi video door phone with indoor monitor. A wired outdoor camera plus a touch-screen monitor inside. The monitor connects to Wi-Fi so the app works too. These need a cable between the two units and mains power, but they give family members a screen to answer without a phone, and they can release an electric lock. Examples: the SLVD-10 and the Hawkvision HV-AD-VL-730.
If you are unsure whether you want Wi-Fi at all, our video door phone buying guide compares wired and Wi-Fi systems side by side.
How long does a video doorbell battery last?
It depends almost entirely on how often the camera wakes up. The VDP-TY has a built-in 4000mAh lithium-ion battery charged through a Type-C port. Its listing says that if the bell is pressed 5 times a day and each ring lasts 10 seconds, it keeps working for about 6 months. The same listing warns that waking the camera often from the app drains the battery faster.
To get the most from each charge:
- Do not open the live view every time you are curious. Each remote wake-up uses power.
- Keep the doorbell where the Wi-Fi signal is strong. A weak signal makes the radio work harder.
- Fit it out of direct afternoon sun. Heat shortens lithium battery life.
- Set a phone reminder to charge it before a long trip, so it does not go flat while you are away.
If you never want to think about charging, choose a mains-powered Wi-Fi door phone with a monitor instead.
How do app alerts and two-way talk work?
When the bell is pressed, the doorbell sends a push notification through its app. The VDP-TY works with the Tuya Smart Life app; the Hawkvision systems use the HawkSmart app. Tap the alert and you enter a video call with the visitor. Speak into your phone and your voice comes out of the doorbell's speaker; the visitor's voice comes through the doorbell's microphone to you.
Beyond the bell button, most models can also alert you to movement. The VDP-TY lists a PIR human-detection sensor that is meant to tell people from animals, and you can wake the camera from the app to check the door even when nobody has rung. The Hawkvision HV-IPK-VL802 lists motion-detection notifications, leaving messages and remote monitoring.
Two practical points for Indian homes. First, the call is only as good as the internet at both ends, so on weak mobile data expect a short delay. Second, the person answering must have the app installed and logged in, so add every family member who should get the call.
Does a Wi-Fi doorbell need 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
Many doorbells only work on 2.4 GHz. The VDP-TY lists 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and its app supports Android 4.3 and above. The Hawkvision HV-AD-VL-730 lists both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If your router combines both bands under one name, the setup can fail; turning on a separate 2.4 GHz network name during setup usually solves it.
Before you buy, stand where the doorbell will go and check the Wi-Fi bars on your phone. Brick walls, steel gates and long distances weaken the signal. If it is weak, move the router, add a Wi-Fi extender, or choose a wired system.
Where should you fit a video doorbell?
- Beside the door at about chest height of an adult, so the camera sees faces rather than the tops of heads.
- Under a canopy or porch roof, away from direct rain and harsh sun.
- Facing the area where visitors stand, not a bright street behind them.
- Screwed down, not only stuck on. The VDP-TY listing notes that when the back panel is fixed with screws, the doorbell cannot be pulled off without force.
Can a Wi-Fi video doorbell record and open the door?
Recording: the VDP-TY records to a memory card up to 128 GB, which is not included. The Hawkvision HV-IPK-VL802 records snapshots and video to an SD card up to 128 GB Class 10, and the HV-AD-VL-730 lists snapshots and video recording to SD card.
Unlocking: a battery doorbell like the VDP-TY is a camera and bell only. To open a door from your phone you need a system with a lock output and an electric lock. The SLVD-10 lists one-button unlock when connected to an electronic lock, and the Hawkvision systems list remote unlock from the app. Our main gate electronic lock guide explains which locks work with these.

FAQ
Does a Wi-Fi video doorbell work without internet?
The bell may still ring the indoor chime, but app alerts, remote video and two-way talk need working Wi-Fi and internet. If your internet drops often, a wired door phone with a monitor is more dependable.
How long does the VDP-TY battery last?
Its listing says about 6 months on a full charge if the bell is pressed 5 times a day for 10 seconds each. Frequent live viewing from the app shortens this.
Can I answer the video doorbell from two phones?
Yes, most Tuya-based doorbells let you share the device with family members in the app so each phone gets the call. Each person needs the app installed and logged in.
Is there a monthly fee for a Wi-Fi video doorbell?
The VDP-TY and the Hawkvision systems record to a memory card, so you do not need a paid cloud plan for basic recording. Check the app for any optional cloud storage offers.
Will a Wi-Fi doorbell work with 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
The VDP-TY needs 2.4 GHz. The Hawkvision HV-AD-VL-730 lists both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
Can a video doorbell be stolen?
Fix it with screws, not just tape. The VDP-TY listing notes that a screw-fixed back panel holds the doorbell tightly so it cannot be pulled off without force.
