Fingerprint Lock for an Outdoor Gate: What Weatherproof Should Mean

Short answer: for an outdoor gate, "weatherproof" should mean the fingerprint reader carries a stated IP rating (IP66, IP67 or IP68) or a clear "built for outdoor gates" line in its listing, the lock body is made for outdoor use, and the power supply stays indoors. On our store, gate kits that meet this cost ₹7,949 to ₹7,950 with the lock included, a standalone IP68 fingerprint panel costs ₹7,999, and a wiring-free waterproof fingerprint padlock costs ₹3,299. Always read the warranty line on water damage before you buy.

Rain, dust and the afternoon sun are the real tests for any keyless gate in India. This guide explains what the weatherproof label actually tells you, which parts need it, and which products on our store state it, with live prices that include GST.

What does "weatherproof" mean on a fingerprint lock?

On its own, "weatherproof" is a sales word with no fixed test behind it. The useful number is the IP rating (Ingress Protection, defined in the IEC 60529 standard). It has two digits:

  • The first digit is dust. 6 means dust-tight.
  • The second digit is water. 5 is protection against water jets, 6 against powerful water jets, 7 against temporary immersion, and 8 against continuous immersion under conditions the maker states.

For a gate reader that faces monsoon rain, IP65 or higher is a sensible minimum. If a listing says "weatherproof" but gives no IP rating, treat it as a claim to confirm, not a guarantee.

Also check the warranty. The BMT-22 smart rim lock on our store is titled weatherproof and described as suitable for outdoor or indoor use, yet its listing also says there is no warranty for water exposure or board damage from water or moisture. That is honest, and it tells you to give the lock some shelter.

Which parts of a gate lock need to be weatherproof?

A wired fingerprint gate lock has three parts, and each lives in a different place:

  1. The reader sits outside the gate at hand height. This is the part that faces rain and sun, so it needs the IP rating.
  2. The lock fixes on the inside face of the gate. The RML-8K used in our kits is listed as weatherproof, with a stainless steel body and key backup.
  3. The power supply goes indoors on a dry wall. Kit listings such as Combo-CN65 say to mount the supply indoors on a dry wall.

All-in-one smart locks (reader built into the lock) and fingerprint padlocks have everything in one body, so the whole unit takes the weather.

Outdoor fingerprint options on our store (27 October 2026)

Product What the listing states about weather Ways to open Price
FPAL-2K padlock Waterproof (title), for warehouse, fence and outdoor gate. No IP rating given Fingerprint (50), TTLock app, 2 keys ₹3,299
Combo-CN214 Title says IP68; description says the ACWP-BCTT panel conforms to IP66, metal housing, anti-vandal Fingerprint, Mifare card, PIN, TTLock app over Bluetooth ₹7,949
Combo-CN65 WB-02 panel described as weatherproof and built for outdoor gates. No IP rating in this listing Fingerprint, card, PIN, 433 MHz remote, Smart Life app ₹7,950
IP68 fingerprint panel IP68 (title), zinc alloy, epoxy-encapsulated, indoor or outdoor. Panel only: lock and 12 V supply extra Fingerprint, ID key fob (5 included), password; 10,000 users ₹7,999
BMT-22 smart rim lock Weatherproof (title), outdoor or indoor, -25 to 55°C; no warranty for water exposure Fingerprint (100), password, IC card, Tuya app, key ₹8,699

Two details worth noticing. First, the Combo-CN214 title and description give different IP numbers (IP68 and IP66); plan for the lower figure. Second, the standalone IP68 panel needs a lock and a 12 V supply added, so its real cost on a gate is higher than ₹7,999.

Where should you fit a fingerprint reader on a gate?

  • Beside the gate, at hand height. Combo-CN65's setup steps say to fix the panel outside, beside the gate at hand height.
  • Out of direct rain where you can. Even a rated reader lasts longer under a small hood or the edge of a canopy. Water on the sensor or on your finger can slow down a read.
  • Away from the afternoon sun. A west-facing reader in an Indian summer gets very hot. Check the operating temperature in the listing; the BMT-22 gives -25 to 55°C.
  • Cable in conduit. Run the wires from the reader and lock to the indoor supply through conduit, sealed at the entry point.

What should you check before buying an outdoor fingerprint lock?

  1. Is an IP rating stated, and is it the same everywhere in the listing? If the title and description differ, use the lower number.
  2. Which part is rated? The reader, the lock, or both. The supply should stay indoors.
  3. What does the warranty say about water? The BMT-22 listing, for example, excludes water damage.
  4. Is there a key backup? The RML-8K in Combo-CN214 and Combo-CN65 has one, as do the FPAL-2K and BMT-22.
  5. Is it a complete kit? Combo-CN214 and Combo-CN65 include the lock and supply. A standalone panel does not.

Which one should you choose?

  • House main gate, open from outside by finger and from inside by app: Combo-CN65 (₹7,950), with Smart Life visitor passwords and an unlock log.
  • House or office gate, opening records and Bluetooth app: Combo-CN214 (₹7,949) with the TTLock app.
  • Many users, such as a society or factory gate: the IP68 fingerprint panel (₹7,999) with up to 10,000 users, plus a lock and supply. Use the access control kit builder to match the parts.
  • A covered porch door rather than an open gate: the BMT-22 (₹8,699), an all-in-one lock that runs on 4 AA batteries or 12 V DC.
  • Farm, godown or fence with no power at the gate: the FPAL-2K padlock (₹3,299). See the smart padlock price guide.

FAQ

What IP rating should a fingerprint lock for an outdoor gate have?

IP65 or higher is a sensible minimum for a reader exposed to rain. On our store, the Combo-CN214 panel is listed at IP66 in its description and the standalone fingerprint panel at IP68.

Can a fingerprint reader work in the rain?

A rated reader is built to survive rain, but water on the sensor or a wet finger can make reading slower. Fitting the reader under a small hood helps, and kits like Combo-CN65 also open by card, PIN, remote or app.

Is "weatherproof" the same as waterproof?

Not necessarily. "Weatherproof" has no fixed test; an IP rating does. Look for the IP number and the warranty terms on water damage.

Does the power supply go outside too?

No. Keep the supply indoors on a dry wall. Only the reader and the lock are fitted on the gate.

Which fingerprint gate lock opens without power?

Battery-powered units do: the FPAL-2K padlock charges by USB, and the BMT-22 runs on 4 AA batteries or 12 V DC. Wired kits built on the RML-8K open with a key in a power cut.

How many fingerprints can an outdoor gate lock store?

From 50 on the FPAL-2K and 100 on the BMT-22 to 10,000 users on the standalone IP68 fingerprint panel, according to their listings.
