Secureye S-VDP9 7-inch video door phone that can release an electronic lock

How to Connect an Electronic Lock to a Video Door Phone

Short answer: a video door phone does not power a gate lock by itself in most setups. Its unlock button closes a relay (lock output), and you wire that output to the door phone input of an electronic lock power supply, which then gives the lock its short 12 V pulse. If you already own a video door phone, a lock with a VDP power supply costs ₹3,999 (Combo-CN133); a complete kit with lock, supply, remotes and a 7-inch video door phone costs ₹10,750 to ₹11,200.

This guide covers how the connection works, how to check your door phone, the wiring steps, and the parts on our store with live prices that include GST.

How does a video door phone open a gate lock?

There are three parts in the chain:

  1. The video door phone. When you press unlock on the indoor monitor, the system closes a relay contact, usually at the outdoor station. Several listings on our store describe this directly: the Secureye S-VDP9 and Hawkvision HV-AD-VL-730 listings say the unit can drive an electronic lock through its relay output.
  2. The lock power supply. It receives that contact on its door phone input and sends power to the lock. The PSRM-01 and PSWF-01 supplies have a terminal for the lock output of a video door phone outdoor station, as their listings state.
  3. The electronic lock. A 12 V rim lock such as the RML-8K releases its latch for a moment, then locks again by itself when the gate shuts.

Using a separate supply keeps the door phone's own adapter from carrying the lock's current. It also lets you open the same gate by remote, switch or app as well as from the monitor.

How do I know if my video door phone can open a lock?

Look in the manual or on the back of the outdoor unit for terminals marked for a lock, such as "LOCK", "NO", "COM" or "UNLOCK". If the manual mentions an unlock button on the indoor monitor, the system almost always has a lock output. On our store, these models state it in their listings:

  • Secureye S-VDP9: can drive an electronic lock through its relay output.
  • Hikvision DS-KIS205T: supports one-touch unlocking for door access.
  • Hawkvision HV-AD-VL-730: relay output for an electronic lock, plus remote unlocking from the HawkSmart app.

Battery-powered Wi-Fi doorbells usually have no lock output at all. If you are unsure, send a photo of your door phone's terminals on WhatsApp before you buy a lock.

How to connect an electronic lock to a video door phone

General steps. Always follow the wiring diagrams of your door phone and your lock supply, and have a trained electrician make the mains connections.

  1. Fit the lock. Mount the rim lock on the inside face of the gate with the strike on the frame. A metal gate may need a welded plate.
  2. Mount the lock supply indoors. On a dry wall, away from water, ideally near where the door phone cable comes in.
  3. Run the lock cable. From the supply's lock terminals to the lock on the gate.
  4. Connect the door phone's lock output. Take two wires from the lock terminals of the outdoor station (or wherever your manual shows the unlock contact) to the door phone input of the supply.
  5. Keep the release short. The Combo-CN133 listing notes the lock should not be powered continuously for more than 7 seconds when unlocking. If your door phone lets you set the unlock time, keep it short.
  6. Test. Ring from the gate, press unlock on the monitor, check the gate releases and locks again when it shuts. Then check the key opens it from outside.

Some audio door phones can power a lock directly. The Combo-CN9 listing says its lock key gives 12 to 18 V DC at 1 A, and the ADP-1M listing says it can be connected directly to the electric lock without a separate power supply. Check your model's manual before wiring a lock straight to a door phone.

FAQ

Can any video door phone open an electronic lock?

Only models with a lock or relay output. Wired kits such as the Secureye S-VDP9 and Hikvision DS-KIS205T state lock release in their listings; many battery Wi-Fi doorbells have no lock output.

Do I need a separate power supply for the lock?

Usually yes. The door phone's relay triggers a lock supply such as the PSRM-01, PSWF-01 or the VDP supply in Combo-CN133. Some audio door phones, like the ADP-1M, say they can drive a lock directly.

Where does the door phone wire connect on the lock supply?

To the supply's video door phone input. The PSRM-01 and PSWF-01 listings describe a terminal for the lock output of a video door phone outdoor station.

Can I open the gate from the door phone and by remote too?

Yes. Supplies such as the PSRM-01 and PSWF-01 take remotes and a door phone input at the same time, as in Combo-CN231 and Combo-CN221.

What happens to the door phone and lock in a power cut?

Both need power, so unlocking from the monitor stops. A rim lock like the RML-8K stays locked and opens from outside with its key.
