12V remote receiver with 2 remotes for an electronic door lock (Combo-CN96)

Electronic Door Lock Not Opening or Remote Not Working? 10 Checks Before You Call a Technician

Short answer: when an electronic door lock will not open, the cause is usually simple: a weak remote battery, a remote that has lost its pairing, no power reaching the lock, a loose wire, or a latch that is jammed against the keeper plate. Work through the 10 checks below in order (cheap, easy causes first). Most problems are fixed with a new battery, a re-pair or a spare part costing ₹430 to ₹2,750, and an electronic rim lock still opens with its key while you sort it out.

Before you start: stay safe

The lock runs on low-voltage DC, but the power supply is connected to mains. Switch off the mains or MCB before you touch any wiring, and never open the power supply box.

10 checks, in the order to try them

1. Check the remote battery

This is the most common cause. If the remote works only from very close, or only after several presses, the battery is weak. Fit a new battery of exactly the type printed on the old one. If you have a second remote, try it: if that one works, the fault is the first remote, not the lock.

2. Re-pair the remote with the receiver

A remote can lose its pairing after a power surge or someone pressing the learn button by mistake. On most receivers you press the small learn button and then the remote key, but follow the manual for your model. For example, the listing for our Combo-CN96 kit (RR-120143 receiver) says: press the learn button on the receiver, then a key on the remote. On the PSWF-01 Wi-Fi power supply, remotes are added with the ADD button, up to 20 compatible 433 MHz remotes.

A new remote must match your receiver's frequency. A 315 MHz remote will not pair with a 433 MHz receiver. Our listings state it: the RM-BR0231 is 315 MHz, the RM-BL0243 is 433 MHz.

3. Check the receiver, the power supply light and the mains

Most power supplies and receivers have a power indicator. If nothing is lit, the problem is power, not the remote. Check the plug, socket switch and MCB, and plug a lamp into the same socket to confirm it is live. If the socket is fine and the supply still shows no sign of life, replace the supply.

4. Look for loose or reversed 12 V wires

Switch off the mains first. Then check the two thin wires that run from the power supply or receiver to the lock. Gates swing thousands of times, so wires work loose and taped outdoor joints corrode. Tighten every terminal and redo any joint that is green, black or broken. If someone recently worked on the wiring, make sure each wire is back on its marked terminal.

Receivers usually have relay terminals marked NO, COM and NC. The CN96 listing says to use NO for rim and gate locks, NC for EM locks. A rim lock on the wrong terminal can get power for too long, and our LKCL-10 coil listing warns that continuous current damages a lock coil. The CN96 listing also says to use momentary mode, so the lock is powered only for a moment.

5. Measure the voltage at the lock terminals

This tells you which half of the system is at fault. Set your multimeter to DC volts and put the probes on the lock's two terminals, on the low-voltage side only. Ask someone to press the remote. The reading should jump close to the lock's rated voltage for a moment (check the label or listing for yours).

  • Voltage arrives, lock does not move: the fault is in the lock itself. Go to checks 6 and 10.
  • No voltage, or much lower than rated: the fault is in the remote, receiver, supply or wiring. Recheck 1 to 4. Long, thin cable also drops voltage; our power supply guide explains why.

6. Check whether the latch is jammed or out of line with the keeper plate

Many ‘lock clicks but will not open’ cases are not electrical at all. When a gate sags or the hinges wear, the latch presses hard against the keeper plate (the strike or latch holder on the frame). The coil then does not have the strength to pull it back. Test it: push the gate towards the frame while someone presses the remote. If it opens when the pressure is off, the problem is alignment. Adjust the keeper plate or gate so the latch sits freely, clean out dust and rust, and use a little lock lubricant. A worn or bent keeper plate can be swapped; we stock the LH-RMLK latch holder for electronic rim locks.

7. Try the key override

An electronic rim lock still opens with its key. If the key turns smoothly, the mechanism is fine and the fault is electrical. If the key is also stiff or the latch drags, the problem is mechanical: alignment, rust or a worn part.

8. Power cut? Use the key, and think about battery backup

Remote and app opening need power. In a power cut, the lock stays locked and you open it with the key. If power cuts are frequent in your area, run the lock supply from an inverter or UPS point, or choose a supply that supports a backup battery. Our guide to access control power supplies and battery backup explains how to size one.

9. Wi-Fi power supply offline? Check the network

If the app shows the lock offline, the supply has usually lost Wi-Fi after a new router, a changed password or a switch to 5 GHz only. The PSWF-01 works on 2.4 GHz home Wi-Fi only; 5 GHz is not supported. To reconnect it, its listing says to tap Add device in the Smart Life app, press the WIFI button on the supply, select it and enter your Wi-Fi password. The same listing advises keeping Inching on at 1 second in the app's Timer, so the lock coil gets only a short pulse.

10. When the coil or latch needs replacing

If check 5 shows correct voltage at the lock and check 6 rules out alignment, the coil has probably burnt out. The listing for our LKCL-10 coil puts it simply: if the lock is not operating on 12 V, the coil needs to be changed. It fits CP Plus, Alba, Secureye, Hikvision, Realtime and OEM rim locks. There is no warranty on the coil, and long periods of power damage it, so fix any wiring or ‘stay on’ setting first. If the latch or lock body is broken, replacing the lock is often the better fix; see our electronic rim lock price guide.

When to stop and call a technician

  • You smell burning, see melted plastic, or the supply is very hot.
  • Water has got into the power supply or receiver.
  • The fault involves mains wiring, the MCB keeps tripping, or you are not comfortable using a multimeter.

FAQ

Why does my electronic lock click but not open?

Usually the gate has sagged and the latch is pressing on the keeper plate, so the coil cannot pull it back. Push the gate towards the frame and try again. If it still only clicks, measure the voltage at the lock: low voltage points to the supply or wiring, full voltage to a weak coil.

How do I pair a new remote?

Buy a remote with the same frequency as your receiver, then follow the receiver's manual. On most receivers you press the learn button and then the remote key. On the Combo-CN96 kit the listing says exactly that; on the PSWF-01 Wi-Fi supply, remotes are added with the ADD button.

Can I open the lock during a power cut?

Yes. An electronic rim lock opens with its key. Remote and app opening need power, so connect the lock supply to an inverter or UPS point, or use a supply with battery backup, if power cuts are common where you live.

The app says my Wi-Fi lock is offline. Is the lock broken?

Usually not. The supply has lost Wi-Fi, often after a router or password change. The PSWF-01 needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; 5 GHz is not supported. Reconnect it in the Smart Life app.
